Desmond was the puppy made for me.
He is out of my very first and ever so perfect ISDS Border Collie Roy and Yvonne Reid’s Working Sheepdog Isla. I always wanted a Roy puppy, and liked Isla very much too – Isla’s sire was from ISDS lines as well - so when he was mated to Isla I was very tempted. When the puppies arrived and a nearly fully black boy was born I couldn’t resist. I visited them at a few days old and again at a few weeks and knew then I couldn’t pass on this perfect dark Roy baby. And so, Desmond came home.
Desmond is a very large athletic powerful dog, with a very soft expression. He is very loyal however will wiggle his bum for anyone in need of cuddle. The older he gets the more he reflects his father. Soft, gentle and kind. He’s a dog anyone would fall in love with, as he really does know how to make you smile. His nature is impeccable with other dogs and people; he loves children especially.
When Desmond works, he is very powerful. Agility is his main focus, where he is a very honest good worker, with an extremely large stride. He is a pleasure to run and every training session feels exciting. Desmond currently works Grade 7 in agility.
I’m looking forward to a long agility career with him.
Desmond is a natural on sheep, having had only a couple of tries it was clear this dogs build and size made him a wonderful Collie for the job. He was powerful but not pushy, using his presences to move the sheep and not bully them.
When I lost Desmond’s sire Roy in 2016 I was (and still am) completely devastated. Having Desmond there with so many wonderful traits of his father really helped and even at the right angle I could swear he was Roy. Everyone seemed to be lost without him. A few months later Desmond really stepped up in the pack, he seemed to mature very quickly and change from an adolescent to a fully developed gentleman like his father. I am very proud of my young dog and his achievements so far, agility and pack related.
It was losing Roy that prompted me to push forward and achieve Border Collie registration with Desmond, in memory of Roy. This in turn re-registered all 6 of Desmond’s offspring (Roy's grandchildren).
My last tribute to Roy, through his son.
